Probing earthquake processes on the seafloor

摘要：

        Certain unique conditions on the seafloor can allow us to probe fundamental earthquake processes in a manner not possible on land. In this talk, I will first share what we learnt about how static and dynamic stress changes affect earthquake occurrence through leveraging seismic, geodetic, and hydrothermal venting data from a permanent observatory on an active submarine volcano that experiences large background seismicity rate and tidal loading. Secondly, I will share what we learnt about earthquake nucleation through analyzing foreshock and aftershock sequences along oceanic transform faults which previous studies suggested host abundant foreshocks and aseismic slip compared to continental strike-slip faults.

报告人简介：

     陈衍佐（TAN Yen Joe），香港中文大学地球与环境科学系副教授。2019年获美国哥伦比亚大学博士学位，随后在美国斯坦福大学地球物理系进行博士后研究，2020年加入香港中文大学。主要研究方向集中于地震、火山及地表过程（包括海洋底部）。发表论文30余篇，其中近五年课题组研究生/博后以第一作者在Science Advances、Nature Communications、Geology等期刊发表论文10余篇。
