Solving real Earth problems using geodynamic models with data assimilation

报告摘要:

Quantifying Earth’s internal dynamics and its surface manifestations represents an ultimate goal of Earth science. This calculation has remained challenging due to the many uncertainties in the associated initial and boundary conditions of the intrinsic 4D nature of the problem. A promising solution forward is through data assimilation, which substantiates a large number of model parameters with available data, thus greatly reducing model uncertainties. During the past decade, our group has developed both forward-in-time and backward-in-time data assimilation techniques that have greatly improved the quantitative expressions on the linkage between deep mantle dynamics and surface tectonics. Here, I will demonstrate how these data-assimilation models work in practice, and how oceanic subduction and the resulting mantle flow influence the Earth surface through generating 3D lithospheric deformation, intraplate volcanism, and earthquakes. Specific examples include the circum-Pacific plates subduction below continents, and evolution of the cratonic lithosphere.

刘丽军教授主要从事地球动力学研究,尤其是通过多学科交叉和数据同化方法研究复杂的实际地球科学问题,包括大洋板片俯冲、地幔流场、和地表响应,大陆岩石圈流变性、密度结构、和长期演化,以及地球在不同时间和空间尺度上的深浅圈层动力耦合。发表科学论文约90篇,包括多篇发表在Nature ScienceNature Geoscience等顶级期刊上。 2003年本科毕业于中国科技大学, 2010年博士毕业于加州理工学院,2010-2012在加州大学圣地亚哥分校任John Mile Postdoc Follow2012-2023在伊利诺伊大学香槟分校担任助理教授、副教授、和正教授,2023年入职中科院地质与地球物理所。曾两次获得AGU Outstanding Student Paper Award, AGU Jason Morgan Early Career Award, NSF CAREER Award。目前担任《中国科学》副主编,Earth and Planetary Physics执行主编,以及国际地球科学家联合会副主席等职位。
